smart

For cars with artificial intelligence, see Smart car.
The correct title of this article is smart (automobile). The initial letter is shown capitalized because of technical restrictions.

Smart Logo

Smart Fortwo
smart (formerly MCC smart) is a brand of microcars and superminis based in Böblingen, Germany. It is marketed as the "smart" in all lower case, as in the logo. The current smart brand logo (seen on the right) denotes a C for "Compact" and an arrow for "forward thinking".
The name of the company, part of DaimlerChrysler, was changed from Micro Compact Car GmbH to Smart GmbH in September 2002. It was merged with Mercedes-Benz Group in 2006 .

The original idea behind the very short "smart car" is that the vehicle is easy to park. It is short enough to allow it to be parked "nose-in" where a conventionally sized car would have to parallel park. Its length of 2.5 metres (98.4 in) equals the width of a truck or a regular parking slot, allowing two or three smarts to park in the same space as one normal car if parked side-on to the usual parking direction.

Smart Fortwo cabriolet
The project idea was originally supported by Swiss watch manufacturer Swatch, and was nicknamed the "Swatchmobile". The name SMART is an acronym for Swatch Mercedes ART.[1][2] The car was supposed to use innovative features (such as a hybrid engine) and to be an affordable car for young people. Similar to the objective for the Citroën 2CV in the 1940s, its purpose was to "transport two people and a case of beer".
Being inexperienced in automobiles, Swatch CEO Nicolas Hayek sought an established car maker to produce his Swatch car, and found a partner in Volkswagen. Plans never reached a final stage so Swatch teamed up with Daimler-Benz. The purpose-built factory complex Smartville in Hambach, Lorraine, France, was established in 1994 as a joint-venture of Daimler-Benz and Swatch.
An Australian dealer web site provides the following summary of the beginnings of the product:
"How everything begun: In 1993 Mercedes-Benz started a feasibility study on a subcompact car. Together with the Swatch Group Ltd. they founded the Micro Compact Car AG in 1994. The smart city-coupé celebrates its world première at the IAA in Frankfurt (Germany) in 1997 and is one year successfully launched in nine European countries. By now, the smart is available in 25 countries all over the world and was sold over 750.000 times."
The final car design proved to be far from Hayek's expectations: its engine technology was more expensive than many small 4 and 5 seater cars sold in Europe. The joint venture experienced heavy losses and Swatch pulled out.
In 2005, DaimlerChrysler decided against purchasing a 50% share in the Dutch NedCar plant used to manufacture the Forfour supermini. DC also halted development on the Formore and decided to discontinue production of the Roadster.
In 2006, after dwindling sales smart GmbH was liquidated and its operations transferred with the Mercedes-Benz group. It was later revealed that smart GmbH took nearly 4 billion euros of losses in the period from 2003 to 2006. [2]
In the same year, DaimlerChrysler announced that it would also cancel the Forfour and redesign the Fortwo to debut in Europe in 2007.
An electric, rechargeable version is being released in the UK, by a separate company, as a lease vehicle on a limited basis.

DORAEMON

by Midori Yoda, Akiko Tanaka, Sanae Tsuchida, and Masami Yamaguchi

Doraemon is a very popular animation show in Japan. There are many characters, such as Nobita, Shizuka, Giant, Suneo, and Doraemon. Doraemon has a fourth dimension pocket. The main tools in the pocket are his "takekopter" (like a helicopter propellor that allows him to fly), Dokodemo Doa ("go anywhere door"), "small light," "big light," etc.. Doraemon's three sizes are all the same. Doraemon is a cat style robot, but he is afraid of mice. After his ears were eaten by them, his body color changed to blue. He likes dorayaki (a Japanese bean curd snack) so much! Nobita is Doraemon's best friend. He is weak, and he is often bullied by Giant (a very big boy) and Suneo (Giant's friend who always sides with Giant), and he always needs Doraemon's help. Nobita is in love with a girl named Shizuka. Doraemon's job is to help Nobita win Shizuka's heart. We think Nobita and Shizuka will get married someday. The stories of Doraemon always introduce new tools to help Nobita. They look like the same stories, but we never feel bored. Doraemon gives us dreams. Doraemon is forever! We hope that we be will be able to get our own Doraemon cat robots in the future.

The new MINI

2003 MINI Cooper S and Mk III classic Mini.

Main article: MINI (BMW)
When production of the classic Mini ceased in 2000, BMW (the new owner of the brand) announced the successor to the Mini – which is variously called the "BMW MINI" or the "New MINI". The brand name for the new car is MINI (written in capital letters).[37]
Some Mini enthusiasts reject the claim that the MINI as the natural successor of the original car - others simply dislike it - yet others were amongst the first to buy the new MINI when it was launched. There are many reasons offered for the negative point of view. One notion is that the classic Mini could have continued in viable production for many more years had it not been 'killed off' to make way for the MINI. The new MINI is larger than the classic Mini. It is around 55 cm longer, 30 cm wider, weighing 1050 kg rather than 650 kg. That, together with the departure from the spartan minimalism of the original, has proven objectionable to some enthusiasts. Others resent the manner in which BMW took the Mini brand name from the Rover group. However, many Mini owners take the opposite view and embrace the new car as a logical succession of the original and view it as the only way the concept could have continued in the light of modern safety, emissions and manufacturing principles. Some Mini clubs go so far as to ban MINIs from their club meetings - others actively seek car enthusiasts from both camps. This spectrum of attitudes has been noted with other retro-car releases such as the Volkswagen Beetle and is far from being unique to the Mini community.
On 3rd April 2007, the one millionth MINI rolled out of the Oxford Plant after six years of production - just one month longer than it took the classic Mini to reach the same total in March 1965.

'Tornado of flames' kills nine firefighters

Story Highlights• "To lose nine is just unbelievable," says Charleston, South Carolina, mayor• Witness describes "a 30-foot tornado of flames" that killed nine firefighters• Warehouse roof collapsed, throwing debris on rescuers, witness says• Four rescued victims "looked scared out of their minds," says witness

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) -- Fire swept through a furniture warehouse, collapsing the building's roof and claiming the lives of nine firefighters in a disaster the mayor described Tuesday as "difficult to fathom or quantify."
"Nine brave, heroic, courageous firefighters of the city of Charleston have perished fighting fire in a most courageous and fearless manner, carrying out their duties," Charleston Mayor Joseph P. Riley said at a morning news conference. "To all of their loved ones, our heart goes out to them."
Two employees in the building were rescued from the blaze, which broke out at about 7 p.m. Monday in the Sofa Super Store and warehouse, Riley said. (Watch firefighters salute as comrades' bodies are brought out )
"To lose nine is just a tragedy of immense proportions," Riley said. "To lose nine is just unbelievable."
Riley said the county coroner planned to disclose the names of the dead. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
Witnesses said the store's roof collapsed, throwing debris over about two-dozen rescue workers. Onlookers were hit with flying ash.
"It was like a 30-foot tornado of flames," said Mark Hilton, who was struck in his eye.
Daniel Shahid, a salesman at a nearby car dealership, said firefighters came in asking for towels.
"The next thing you know, we were carrying hoses, directing traffic, everybody from the dealership," he said.
Shahid said he saw firefighters rescue four people from the building. "They were struggling. They were covered in black soot. They looked scared out of their minds," Shahid said.
He later told CNN the roof collapsed too quickly for anyone to escape. "It came from nowhere," he said. "It was a standing structure and five seconds later it was on the ground."
Riley called the missing firefighters heroes.
"This is a profession that we must never take for granted," the mayor said. "There's a fire raging and they go toward it."

Foreign-born students study the tropics in America

Story Highlights• Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center is based at Univ. of Missouri-St. Louis• Scholars from more than 20 nations conduct research at the center• The tropical ecology center has 50 Ph.D. students and 80 in the master's program• The center draws on resources at the botanical garden and the St. Louis Zoo

ST. LOUIS, Missouri (AP) -- Hunched over her desk at the Missouri Botanical Garden, Cynthia Hong-Wa scrutinizes tropical plants found only in her homeland almost 9,600 miles away in Madagascar.
She collected 50 plant specimens from the African island, but it is here that she learns about them -- in a program where she compares her samples to others drawn from roughly 6 million dried plants preserved in an herbarium in St. Louis.
Hong-Wa uses a digital caliper and sometimes peers through a microscope to measure leaves, flowers and fruits from her samples, as she works to define differences between the plant species she focuses on, shrubs and small trees known as Leptolaena. They're not the prettiest plants around, but Hong-Wa says their beauty comes from their diversity.
Understanding the differences will help efforts to protect those that are endangered.
Scholars from more than 20 nations conduct research at the Whitney R. Harris World Ecology Center, which has an international reputation for its ecology and conservation research and educational programs. Based at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, the center draws on resources at the botanical garden and the St. Louis Zoo, both among the top institutions of their kind.
"We're from the tropics, but we come here to study the tropics," said Hong-Wa. "We come here to have a better understanding of what's going on there."
The tropical ecology center, tied to the university's biology department, has 50 Ph.D. students and 80 in the master's program. Linking the garden and zoo to the university allowed the program to provide resources that many others did not have.
Students can use the botanical garden's herbarium, which looks something like the stacks in a library but smells faintly like a spice rack.
Peter Stevens, the Whitney Center's director, turns a knob to open up an aisle between two rows of shelves, and the lights kick on overhead. On the shelves are pages upon pages of mounted plant specimens from all over the world, with information including their names, who identified them and the geographic coordinates for where they were collected.
The specimens, their pollen and seedlings can be studied. Researchers can determine how a plant's anatomy changed over time, what the whole plant looks like and where it grows.
The herbarium's plant stock comes from botanists who send in specimens stuck on acid-free paper and often wrapped in foreign-language newspapers to protect them during their travels.
Students draw from the latest scientific literature as well as rare books, like a 1735 copy of Swedish scientist Carl Linnaeus' Systema Naturae, a Latin text that Stevens handles gently. The book classifies organisms in a system that became the international standard.
The students also have opportunities to learn from researchers, assisting them with international work.
Patricia Parker, a professor in zoological studies, is studying three groups of pathogens, or disease-causing agents, on the Galapagos Islands located 625 miles off Ecuador's Pacific coast. The pathogens include one parasite that was having a detrimental affect on certain populations, like the Galapagos Hawk, particularly on smaller islands.
The Galapagos Islands are known for their unique plant and animal life. Darwin's observations of its finches inspired his theory of evolution.
While the Galapagos National Park already works to keep tourism from having a negative impact on the islands, the findings led researchers to recommend that tourism be further restricted on smaller islands there to avoid accidental introduction of new disease agents to particularly at-risk populations.

Internet English Final

1. Describe my chatting experiences with my peers

I want to tell you about my chatting experiences with my peers. When we begin to chat, I do not understand what we have to discuss, but when Leon starts to say the first sentence in our chat. At the same time, we start our chat. We begin to discuss our business English report. First, we decide our report topic, what company we want to do and how many people in our group. After that, which parts of company that we need to find some information in our report. Finally, we decide KFC become the theme of our report, and ten people in our group. We determine that discuss the report on Sunday afternoon with all group members. Until we finish our chatting, we still discuss the report with more than one hour.

In my opinion, I think that chat with my group members in English is very helpful, because I can only chat in English without any Chinese. I think it’s not very easy to me. When Andy or Leon key in some words that I don’t understand. I need to confirm with the dictionary in the short time, or use Martian words to express my feeling. Just like ORZ, OGC, OMG and 3Q ORZ, that means I don’t know the meaning of the sentence or use the other way to give my voice to everyone. If I have no enough time to check the meaning of sentence. The Martian words are helpful to me. Then, when Andy told some jokes about KFC and McDonald’s in our chat room. It makes everyone laugh. Sometime, they types speed are too fast. I will key in ….. to complain that speed too fast. It sounds very funny, right. In our chat room, you can use different methods to express your idea. Even though. Your English is not very well, just like me. You can find a kind of chat way which is suitable for you. After I finished our chat, I discovered that I have interesting in chat of English. So, I hope I will have a chance to chat with my friend in English next time. I not only chat about report with friends but also other thing. I feel that my chat experience is not enough, include English words definition, grammar and also the English writing skills. All of them are not enough. I think I can do well next time than before.
2. My blog and blog experiences

I want to introduce my blog and tell you my blog experiences. My blog name is Ed’s blog. I think it is very easy to understand why I choose this name for my own blog. Because my English name is Ed. My blog includes several parts. There are self introduction, online dictionaries, ESL or EFL resources, news, chat room, hot potatoes and other parts. I will tell you more about my blog in the next paragraph. After that, I will move on my blog experience. I hope you will love it.

First, I want to introduce my blog. As you can see, the name of my blog is on the top of my web blog. On the right site, you can see the sidebar. It includes contributors, hyperlinks and other parts. Then, the first part is my self introduction. In my self introduction, you can see the picture of my dog. The name of my dog is Momo and it’s a Labrador. Momo is a Japanese name. Its English meaning is peach. I love Momo very much, even though it is very naughty. Next, it is online dictionaries. If you do not understand the meaning of the word, you can choose one of dictionaries from this part. Then, you will get some information of the word. Then is the ESL or EFL Resources, there are five websites of English learning websites. After that, there are news, movie and song. In the part of movie and song, I select “The Live Free or Die Hard”, is coming soon in 2007 and why I choose it, because this movie just has two sentences of script. About the music, I select “P.S I'm Still Not over You”, it’s Rihanna’s song. She is one of my favorite singers. Next is reviewing websites, we need to select three websites from those five ESL or EFL resources, and describe the advantages and disadvantages about the three websites. Then, is the chat room that I chatted with our group members. Final, is my favorite car. Smart for four is one of my favorite cars, but I have no enough money to buy it. Even though it is already out of serve, but I still love it. This is all of my blog.

Then, I move on my blogging experiences. Before this class, I never touch the Internet English and web blog. So it’s not easy for me to create it, but I think that is helpful to me to learning English even though the blog is all English. For example, if I do not understand the meaning of the word, I can choose one of online dictionaries from my web blog. Then, I will get some information about the meaning of the word. ESL or EFL English learning websites can help me to learn English, too. I can get enough information about English learning from these websites. About JCloze, it’s a kind of games that is helpful to learn English. You can select it in my blog. Then you will find some blank spaces. If you want to win the game, you need to associate the answer with the information below the page of website in thinking. It has some cues about the blank. I not only learn vocabulary but also learn definition of words form the JCloze. About NEWS, I need to read it narrowly, and search out the definition of words. It helps me learn some new words and learn how to use online dictionaries to find the definition of the words if I don’t understand the meaning. The movie and song helps my listening. Because I need to write down the scripts of the movie, I have to listen very carefully. About what feature attracted me, I think that are putting pictures and having links on my web blog. I can put some traveling photos on my blog, and show these pictures to everyone. About links, I can link some websites of movies and songs or other kind of websites. If I find some interesting websites or my favorite songs on the internet, I can put those links on my blog and share them to everyone. With reference to difficulties, I think that HTML code is too difficult to me, because I never learn it before. I don’t know how to use it to do many things on my blog, even though I have used computer for many years. So the most difficult is HTML code. There are so many things that I don’t understand about the blog, but I want to learn HTML code more, although it’s not very easy. But I think if I understand more about that, I will be more interested in it.
